Workshop 10-11/03/2011: Tectonics

Nick Champkins of Allies & Morrison came down from London last week to lead a two day workshop with both years. Nick discussed the concept of poiesis with reference to facades and openings, and how “the internal and external surfaces of a building envelope, can be used to order and articulate internal spaces, while acknowledging and responding to material context”. The workshop began with the analysis and reinterpretation through modelling of a number of paintings/collages ranging from:

Carlo Crivelli - Annunciation with St Emidius, 1486

to

Richard Hamilton - Just What Is It That Makes Today's Homes So Different So Appealing, 1956

(Thanks to Stelios for the photos.)

The final stage of the workshop was to re-examine these investigations in the context of our own project work, again exploring through the use of models.
